Instructor directions are listed below:

  1. Explain to students that the third column, "V", is for values.  Values are things that are important to you and are often very personal.  It may be helpful to think of these as "non-negotiables" of things you want to have in your future job.  A few examples might be along the lines of schedule, attire, compensation, or education required.

  2. Share some examples of your values and how that relates to what you do for work.

  3. Have students write their values in the "V" column on their boards or in the "Values" section of their Wearable Tech Notebook. Allow ample time for students to think and write.

  4. Ask if anyone would like to share one of their values with the class.

  5. Explain to students that knowing your values helps you to look for companies and careers where your values are met. Gaining insights into your values allows you to know what is important to you in your future of work and express those values to others.

As with strengths and interests, try not to give too many examples as students are identifying their values, but rather leave it open-ended to allow time for students to self-reflect. You can use our values examples, provided in the Thinkabit Lab Starter Kit. They are also listed below.

For more examples on work values and how they relate to careers, visit www.onetonline.org/find/descriptor/browse/Work_Values/.

Some examples of values you can share with your students include:

  • Supportive workplace
  • Wages
  • Accomplishment
  • Independence
  • Responsibility
  • Creativity
  • Recognition
  • Friendliness
  • Consistency
  • Team Work

If you are using the Thinkabit Lab Notebook:

Have students write their values on page 6.
