  1. Try switching the direction of the resistor, keeping it connected to the red and blue rows.
  2. Try switching the direction of the LED, keeping it connected to the blue and black rows.

Warning: If the LED is plugged into the red row (5V) and black row (GND) the LED it will break.

STEM Connections

Switching the direction of the resistor does not change the outcome because it does not have polarity. Electric current can flow through the resistor in either direction. Switching the direction of the LED does change the outcome because it has polarity. Electric current can only flow through the LED in one direction.

  1. Flipping the LED will not break the LED. Ask them what they think will happen before they do it. The LED should be off when plugged in the wrong direction.
  2. Flipping the resistor will not change the circuit. Ask them what they think will happen before they do it. The LED should be on regardless of what direction the resistor is plugged in.
