  1. Share with students: Qualcomm has more than 1,000 patents.
  2. A patent protects an invention.
  3. Some of Qualcomm’s most recognizable patents include inventions on:
  4. Explain to students that invention takes time, which means that Qualcomm engineers are constantly thinking of features people will want on their smartphones well in advance of commercialization of the technology.
  5. For example, innovations by Qualcomm engineers imagining a future of smartphones and apps led to a patent on mobile app distribution that was filed in 2001, well before the arrival of the first smart phone in 2007.
  6. Qualcomm works to anticipate technological advances before people know they need them. For example, despite the fact that mobile carries told them that people did not want internet on their phones, Qualcomm was still dedicated to coming up with a solution. This solution was to embed the mobile internet capabilities on their devices, which later activated the mobile internet. People were so excited to have internet on their phones, and today we can’t imagine not having the internet in our pockets and at our fingertips.
