Instructor directions are listed below:
- Ask students to flip to the Consumer Electronics Card.
- Explain that consumer electronics are all of the electronics that we, the consumers, use for fun and entertainment. This includes items such as cameras, drones, robots, printers, remote controllers, wearables and more.
- Ask students if they know of any smart devices that would be part of the consumer electronics category.
- Read the description from the back of the Consumer Electronics Card: "Consumer Electronics in the IoT space can include products that can receive, read and analyze, and wirelessly send that information via a mobile device or the cloud. For example, if you are wearing a fitness tracker, the tracker’s sensor can collect the number of steps you take and your heart rate and then other components within the tracker can send that information wirelessly."
- Share with students a real-world example of consumer electronics: Qualcomm® Smart Headset Reference Design for Amazon Alexa Voice Service
Qualcomm Smart Headset Reference Design is offered by Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and/or its subsidiaries.
The consumer electronics category of IoT is one that most students should be familiar with. If they are having trouble realizing that their devices are part of the IoT, you can refer to them as "smart" devices, which often is more common language with students. You may also want to give some examples of smart devices that you have which may trigger your students to think of similar examples.
