Instructor directions are listed below:

  1. Ask students to flip to the Smart Cities Card.

  2. Explain that IoT in the area of smart cities includes things like smart buildings, smart energy, smart infrastructure, smart transportation, and more.  It also includes everyone's favorite invention: the self-driving car.

  3. Ask students if they know of any smart devices that would be part of the smart cities category.

  4. Read the description from the back of the Smart Cities Card: "IoT in the area of Smart Cities includes products that use technology with multiple sensors that work together across a large area to collect and wirelessly send information from different locations to a single location where it is then analyzed. This analyzed information can be used to make large-scale decisions to benefit a city.  For example, traffic signals with sensors can monitor traffic and work together to adapt to changing traffic conditions, which can help solve traffic problems."

  5. Share with students a real world example of smart cities: smart energy

  6. Share the following 101 seconds on Smart Cities video with students:

Smart cities is usually the toughest area of IoT for students to relate with, so showing the video of Qualcomm's connection with smart energy might be a good starter.  Feel free to explore the Qualcomm site for other IoT examples from this category and others.
