Instructor directions are listed below:
- Ask students to flip to the Smart Homes Card.
- Explain that IoT in the area of Smart Homes includes things like smart appliances, smart lighting, home security, smart thermostats, and more.
- Ask students if they know of any smart devices that would be part of the smart homes category.
- Read the description from the back of the Smart Homes Card: "IoT in the area of Smart Homes includes products that use technology with sensors to communicate with each other over short distances and send information wirelessly to your mobile device or the cloud. For example, you can use an app on your phone to control the lights in your house, open or close the garage door or see what’s inside your fridge, even when you are away from home."
- Share with students a real world example of smart homes: Vector, a smart home robot
Smart homes are becoming more and more popular, so this may be another category that students are familiar with because they have some of these items in their homes or have seen the commercials. If you have any smart home devices, you can share how you are able to connect with those from your phone to make your life easier, safer, etc.
