1. Click and drag a button from the “User Interface” option of the "Palette" section to the Screen in the "Viewer" section. Notice that Button1 is added to the list of components.
2. In the "Properties" section
a. Change the Text of the button to “Grow”
b. Change the Width to “Fill parent …”
c. Change the Background Color to a color of your choice (optional)
3. In the Components section, click “Rename” and change the name of the button to “Grow”
4. Repeat steps 1-3 to create two additional buttons, labeling them “Shrink” and “Disappear”
Circulate the room to ensure that each group has added a button and changed the name and the text. They do not have to change the color or the width if they don’t want to. You may also want to ask students to stop modifying this button when you are ready to move on to the next step. Some students could spend 15 minutes playing with the properties of this one button, so we recommend asking them to move on and come back to the design later.
Don’t see the "Button" in the "Palette"
- In the "Palette" section, click on "User Interface" and "Button" is the first option. Drag and drop the button onto the screen in the "Viewer" section.
Don’t see where in the "Properties" section to change the text, width, or background color
- Be sure that you are modifying the properties of the button and not the screen, click on "Button1" in the "Components" section to modify the button’s properties.
- Scroll down and keep looking, it’s there!
